Docent OpportunitiesCamp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center docents are volunteers who communicate their love of nature and the Florida environment to small groups of children or adults, either in the Park, in classrooms, or at meetings of community groups. These Docents provide vital links for the visitors through these programs: Interpretive Walks, Outreach Programs, Speakers Bureau Presentations and Storytelling. Docents also assist in other aspects of Center operations. Interpretive Walks: Volunteer interpreters lead lively tours through the trails within Camp Bayou that meander through habitats characteristic of Florida- Flatwoods, Hardwood Hammock, Wetlands and River. Outreach Programs: Outreach Programs bring the outdoors right into classrooms! Docents travel to elementary schools, offering opportunities for students to take part in hands-on demonstrations. It’s the next best thing to a Bayou visit--and is a perfect complement to a full on-site tour. Speakers Bureau: Speakers Bureau Docents visit community organizations and professional groups where they talk with adults on topics that are informative and entertaining. Speakers draw on natural resources to develop talks or shape existing talks to suit their own interests and presentation styles. Storytelling: Storytellers take part in numerous programs for children and adults. They tell tales that have a direct link to local heritage, including traditional Cracker stories, stories of early residents, and tales drawn from our county’s rich cultural heritage. Docents use the library resources and speak with local native Floridians to find stories and shape them to become audience-pleasers. Other Volunteer Opportunities: Docents assist in the Library, the ‘Corner Store’, staff the visitor desks, greet visitors, work with school groups, present lectures and run a puppet theater. They also serve behind the scenes, assisting in: exhibit research, project design and prepare displays; administrative tasks; writing articles for the quarterly newsletter; tending the native plants nursery; public relations and just about any other task you can think of. Training Program: The training is low key. The first meeting provides a brief overview of the program which is described in a manual. It is supplied with basic information, responsibilities, procedures and resource materials. Subsequent meetings are at your discretion and convenience and may include speakers from Resource Management, local environmental groups, government agencies, as well as support through classes in CPR and first aid. It is recommended that you attend these extra training opportunities since they will enhance your skills, experience and confidence.
